The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has approved significant compensation payments for police officers involved in a fatal accident while returning from election duty in Edo State.
The tragic incident, which occurred on September 24, 2024, claimed the lives of five officers and left eleven others hospitalized along the Zaria-Kano Expressway.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP detailed the financial assistance being provided.
Families of the deceased officers will receive ten million naira (₦10,000,000), while those currently undergoing treatment will be granted two million naira (₦2,000,000).
Officers who have been discharged after treatment will receive five hundred thousand naira (₦500,000).
Egbetokun expressed his commitment to the welfare of police personnel, stating, “The IGP has taken decisive actions to provide support to those affected, acknowledging their profound loss and assisting them during this challenging period.”
He also extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized the importance of ensuring that all officers receive the necessary medical support.
The statement highlighted that eight individuals have already been discharged from the hospital, while three remain under care.
