President Bola Tinubu has upgraded the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), the nation’s second-highest national honour.

This development comes after the House of Representatives’ intervention, urging the President to reconsider his initial recognition of Abbas with the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.

According to Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, “President Tinubu was persuaded by the House of Representatives’ position and has decided to remedy the historical error and oversight.”

He added, “Thus, he has decided to upgrade the Speaker to GCON from CFR, in accordance with the National Order of Precedence.”

The upgrade is seen as a victory for the House of Representatives’ advocacy, and Abbas will be formally decorated with his new honour at a later date.

In a related development, the Senate President and other principal officers of the National Assembly, as well as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, will also be formally decorated with their respective honours.
